Identifying Your Learning Style

Each of us are defined by different learning habits / types, some of which include:

  • The Kinaesthetic Learner
  • The Visual Learner – e.g. watching someone else answer questions.
  • The Read and Write Learner – e.g. make notes and learn them.
  • The Auditory Learner – e.g. listening to audio recordings of your notes

Understanding yourself will make your learning much easier, so it is critical to read about the above learning habits / types in more detail.

The Kinesthetic Learner

Kinesthetic Learners enjoy experimenting and learn better through trial and error. A more practical approach to learning is more effective. They engage with learning resources and material through a variety of senses and enjoy solving real-world problems. Though they may enjoy doing the work, most kinesthetic learners’ attention span is finite.

Essential Study Tips for Kinesthetic Learners:

  • During your study sessions, create and use visual aids 
  • Make an effort to learn through hands-on activities such as creating project designs or some roleplaying
  • Make use of the computer to strengthen your learning through your sense of touch.
  • Experiment with learning alongside others and discussing thoughts with them.
  • During your revising sessions, take frequent breaks of about 10-15 minutes.
  • Time yourself by setting a timer.
  • When taking notes, use examples to help you remember later.

The Visual Learner

Visual learners learn best when given visual demonstrations and presentations; they think in pictures and take detailed notes and they can be very artistic/creative.

Essential study tips for Visual Learners:

  • Use visual aids with colourful writing and drawings such as diagrams and mindmaps.
  • Make your notes by taking time to think about your material and interpreting it in a more concise approach
  • Use online videos and presentations from reputable sources to help understand the material better.
  • Create visual aids, such as flashcards or a large poster with key points that are easy to remember.
  • When reading, highlight and underline text, then add brief notes that will remind you what the material is about.

The Reader and Writer Learner

Learners that consider themselves as readers and writers find reading and writing the most efficient methods of learning.  They take detailed notes in class and comprehend explanations written on paper or screen. They prefer listing their thoughts which aids in mental organisation.

The Auditory Learner

Auditory learners listen and prefer to verbalise their study content in order to learn because they prefer to think in a linear manner. They may look for keywords and phrases that are simple to remember. They respond well and understand better when things are read aloud to them. They would, however, prefer to read gradually and slowly.

Essential Study Tips for Auditory Learners:

  • Make a recording of your school lessons so that you may listen to them afterwards.
  • Talk to yourself as you are writing your notes down, then read it aloud.
  • Make a voice note or audio recording of yourself reading your study notes and listen to it afterwards.
  • Orally explain your notes to someone. They can even advise if you understand your work or not.
  • Associate words you understand together to help you remember something difficult.
