The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is an academic qualification and exam conducted in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. This is conducted in Key Stage 4 for a particular subject. Although, in Scotland, state schools use the Scottish Qualifications Certificate and private schools in Scotland offer an alternative qualification.
GCSE qualifications are offered for one chosen school subject such as Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art, and Design, etc. The government in the U.K came up with a list of preferred subjects i.e., The English Baccalaureate. The Progress 8 benchmark metric, as we know, is evaluated based on the results in 8 GCSEs that include English, Maths and Science.
GCSE exam studies and preparation need two to three academic years to complete. Usually, this depends on the subject, school, and exam board chosen by the student. Studies and preparation usually start in Year 9 or Year 10 for most students. Finally, students sit for the GCSE exams at the end of Year 11.
