What is Admission Test?

Sometimes, you need to sit for an admission test if you wish to apply to a university for a specific course. This is required and is a part of the application process. We will discuss different types university admission tests here.

In case you apply for a course for which an admissions assessment is required, you must check the registration deadline for the assessment. Usually, October 15th is the deadline for you to sit the test for many courses. It is important for you to check key dates and deadlines for the exam you are required to sit and plan in advance all the necessary arrangements you need to do to sit the exam. 

Moreover, most of the admission tests happen between August & November. This is a year before you’re supposed to start your studies.

1) Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic Admissions Assessment (ASNCAA)

The Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic (ASNC) course will allow you to explore a variety of cultures. You will learn history, language and literature of the peoples of Britain, Ireland and the Scandinavian world from the earlier Middle Ages. You can choose the specific area of study and to support you with your learning Cambridge will provide you with necessary and rare resources. These resources are made available at the Cambridge University Library and in a few museums.

2) Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Admissions Assessment (AMESAA)

Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) gives exposure to global cultures in the modern world. It includes an in-depth study of language, culture as well as history that gives you useful knowledge and skills. There is a myriad of areas that you can study in this course, typically ranging from Japan (East) to Morocco (West), and from the classical to the modern period.

The BMAT test is used by universities to select applicants for medical, dental, biomedical and veterinary degree programmes. Here, your ability to apply scientific and mathematical knowledge is tested. Also, problem solving, critical thinking & written communication skills that are considered necessary for studying at the university level.

4) Classics Admissions Test (CAT)

You need to sit for the Classics Admission Test (CAT) if you wish to apply to one of the following courses.

  1. Classics
  2. Classics and English
  3. Classics and Modern Languages
  4. Classics and Oriental Studies

CAT is a paper-based test, mainly divided into three sections: 

  1. The Latin Translation Test
  2. The Greek Translation Test
  3. The Classics Language Aptitude Test (CLAT). 

Each of these sections lasts for an hour. Which of the above sections you sit for depends on whether you are applying for Classics I or Classics II.

5) Economics Admissions Assessment (ECAA)

This Economics course offers a deep understanding of You also learn ideas and techniques from many other disciplines too; such as Mathematics, Statistics, History, Politics and Sociology. This course offers a wide range of jobs and opportunities.

6) Engineering Admissions Assessment (ENGAA)

This Engineering course usually lasts four years. It further leads to the degrees such as BA (with Honours) and MEng (There is no BSc or BEng degrees in Cambridge and all undergraduates take the BA). 

From second year onwards you will have an option to study Chemical Engineering as a distinct course. Similarly during the third year, you will have an option to study a number of other Engineering disciplines. Moreover, even Manufacturing Engineering is offered as a distinct course. When the third year ends, you will be qualified for a BA (with Honours). 

Although, this course is designed for four years leading to the BA (with Honours) and MEng. This provides you with an academic qualification with the accreditation of one of the best Engineering Institutions and fully satisfies the basic requirements to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Students who leave after 3 years would leave this professional education unfinished.

7) English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT)

English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT) is a pre-interview admissions test. This has to be taken by applicants who are planning to take any English Undergraduate course at the University of Oxford and English at the University of Cambridge. 

For the University of Cambridge, assessment arrangements may vary for mature applicants. It is one of the elements that admissions officials use to finalize a candidate for the interview.

ELAT is a test that is paper-based and it lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes. A candidates’ close reading skills, and their ability to shape and articulate an informed response to unfamiliar literary material is tested in the assessment. Candidates are asked to write one essay comparing, two passages and need to focus on the following elements:

8) Geography Admissions Assessment (GAA)

Some of the biggest challenges our planet faces are studied by geographers around the world. These challenges range from food security, climate and biodiversity emergencies to global pandemics, from social inequalities to volcanoes and melting ice sheets. 

This Geography course aims to tackle these issues. You do not need to choose whether to study physical or human geography since you have an option to do both during these three years.

This course allows you to study both human and physical geography (you can choose to study one of these areas from the second year).

Usually, you need to sit 6-8 lectures each week, including practicals, laboratory work as well as field classes. Moreover, you normally have three sessions a fortnight, during these sessions you get to discuss a topic beyond the syllabus that is usually based on reading, essay writing, preparation of presentations or answering data response questions.

9) History Admissions Assessment (HAA)

This History course lets you explore the past as well as study the interaction between History and other disciplines, such as politics, anthropology, sociology, economics and even archaeology. You can pursue personal interests and can even experiment with various historical approaches. It also allows you to work with resources such as Hollywood movies, Middle Eastern newspapers or medieval plague records. 

One needs to sit the History Admissions Assessment (HAA) to get into this course. This assessment will last for one hour instead of two, and will be similar to the second part of the old assessment. The purpose of this challenging assessment is to understand a candidate’s potential to excel in an academically challenging undergraduate degree.

10) History Aptitude Test (HAT)

In the case of all the courses that involve History, Oxford University uses a History Aptitude Test (HAT) to select candidates.

History Aptitude Test (HAT) aims to test the skills and potential of the candidate required to study History at university. The test is challenging and helps select only the best applicants for university courses. This includes those who have achieved the highest grades.

The History Aptitude Test consists of one question that is based on an extract from a primary source. This has to be answered in 1 hour. Candidates will be expected to provide thoughtful inputs about the source without knowing its context. This is a test of skills and not just historical knowledge.

11) Human, Social, and Political Sciences Admissions Assessment (HSPSAA)

The Human, Social, and Political Sciences Admissions Assessment (HSPSAA) test is needed to sit by a student if the student wants to study the Human, Social, and Political Sciences course at some universities.

This course offers specialisation in 

  • Politics and international relations 
  • Social anthropology
  • Sociology

You can choose to study either one or two of these since the first year combines all three of these, it enables you to explore all of them with flexibility.

Depending on your choice from the above-given subject(s), you may opt to sit for individual papers in the other HSPS subjects or from other courses as well.

12) Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT)

Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing and the University of Oxford are working together in the administration of the MAT.

The Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT) is a paper-based test. It has a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes long. subject-specific admissions test for applicants to the University of Oxford’s undergraduate degree courses in Mathematics, Computer Science and their joint degrees.

You will need to sit for the MAT if you wish to apply for one of the following courses in the above universities:

  • Computer Science
  • Computer Science and Philosophy
  • Mathematics
  • Mathematics and Computer Science
  • Mathematics and Philosophy
  • Mathematics and Statistics

This test is designed for all students (including those without a Further Mathematics A-level or equivalent). It aims to assess the skills of a student in Mathematical understanding instead of assessing based on theoretical knowledge. 

The knowledge and skills required to solve the questions are taken from a syllabus that is similar to AS Level Maths, with just a few extra topics from the A Level Maths syllabus.

13) Modern Languages Admissions Test (MLAT)

If you are applying for one of the following courses you will be required to sit the MLAT as part of the admissions process:

  • European and Middle Eastern Languages
  • Classics and Modern Languages
  • English and Modern Languages

  • Modern Languages
  • Modern Languages and Linguistics
  • Philosophy and Modern Languages

The Modern Languages Admissions Test (MLAT) is a paper-based test that consists of 10 sections. Which sections you take depends on the course you are applying for.

There are eight individual sections for each of the following languages: Czech, French, German, Italian, Modern Greek, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. The other two sections are: the Language Aptitude Test (LAT: for those applying for new languages as beginners and for Russian on its own), and the Philosophy test (for those applying for Philosophy and Modern Languages). The Philosophy section lasts 60 minutes while each other section is 30 minutes.

14) Natural Sciences Admissions Assessment (NSAA)

Some universities require the students to sit the Natural Sciences Admissions Assessment (NSAA) to study the Natural Sciences course. 

A wide range of physical & biological science disciplines from 16 departments is offered in this unique and demanding course of Natural Sciences. First-year is combined and the second year is full of specialisation areas. In the third year, there is a possibility of total specialisation. This course allows you to experience new disciplines of Science, discovering the interconnections between a variety of subjects.

15) Oriental Languages Aptitude Test (OLAT)

You need to sit the Oriental Languages Aptitude Test (OLAT) if you wish to study any of these Oriental Languages courses

  • Hebrew
  • Persian
  • Turkish
  • Arabic
  • Jewish 

These are studied as a part of one of the following courses: 

  • Oriental Studies
  • Classics and Oriental Studies (Oriental Studies with Classics)
  • European and Middle Eastern Languages
  • Religion and Oriental Studies

This is a paper-based test that lasts up to 30 minutes and is designed to check a student’s ability to analyse how languages work, in a way that does not depend on your knowledge of any particular language. 

Note: Candidates for Classics with Oriental Studies need to sit for the CAT, and need not sit for the OLAT.

16) Physics Aptitude Test (PAT)

At some universities, applicants who wish to study Physics or Physics & Philosophy must take the Physics Aptitude Test (PAT). This is a test of 2 hours and evaluates a student’s skills in Physics & Maths. Oxford works in partnership with the Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing to administer the Physics Aptitude Test (PAT).

17) Psychological and Behavioural Sciences Admissions Assessment (PBSAA)

Psychology is very diverse as well as complex. It overlaps with many other areas such as anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, neuroscience, philosophy and sociology. The Psychological and Behavioural Sciences (PBS) course gives you the opportunity to specialise in cognitive, social, developmental and biological psychology. You will get to study this within a broader context of the behavioural sciences.

This course offers a wide range of topics enabling you to study the topics that interest you most in greater depth.

The Psychological and Behavioural Sciences Admissions Assessment (PBSAA) is required to sit as a part of the application process to get selected for this course.

18) Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA)

Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) focuses on the mathematical thinking & reasoning skills necessary for university Mathematics. It allows students to showcase their potential. It focuses on the crucial skills of Mathematics. These skills are not typically tested during school qualifications. Helps the examiner to identify students with the best possible chance of success.

19) Theology Admissions Assessment (TAA)

Across the world, six out of seven people claim to be religious. These drive social & political change globally. This course will help you increase your intercultural literacy, critical thinking, research skills and understanding of the depth of human experience. It addresses basic questions through a variety of religious traditions & philosophical viewpoints.

The Theology Admission Assessment (TAA) is required to enter some universities offering this Theology course.

20) Thinking Skills Assessment Oxford (TSA)

The Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) measures your skills in critical thinking and problem solving (these skills are essential for higher education).

Computer-based Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) can also be taken (some universities may require you to take the computer-based exam). The type of questions seen in the paper-based test and computer-based test is the same (of the same type).

It is divided into two parts:

  1. A 90-minute, multiple-choice Thinking Skills Assessment
  2. A 30-minute writing task

You will be required to take both the above-mentioned sections of the TSA if applying for the following courses:

  • Experimental Psychology
  • Geography
  • Human Sciences
  • Philosophy
  • Politics and Economics
  • Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics

But if you are applying for Economics and Management or History and Economics, you need to take only Section 1.

21) Thinking Skills Assessment Oxford Chemistry (TSAC)

The Thinking Skills Assessment Oxford Chemistry (TSAC) is a 2-hour pre-interview test required to enter undergraduate Chemistry courses at the University of Oxford. It helps tutors to assess the candidate has the skills needed to study the following:

22) University of Oxford Philosophy Test (PHIL)

Every candidate who applied for Philosophy & Theology is required to sit this Test.

The University of Oxford Philosophy Test (PHIL) is a paper-based test that lasts for 60 minutes and tests a candidate’s philosophical reasoning skills. You do not need to undertake any formal study of philosophy before this test as it is not a test of theoretical philosophical knowledge but a test of skills.

It includes a comprehension exercise and short essay writing or answering a structured question. Precision and careful reasoning to answer the question should be focused on. A candidate must avoid expressing an opinion without evidence or an argument that supports the opinion.

You need to take this test If you apply for Philosophy, Psychology and Linguistics (PPL) or Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE).

23) Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP)

The Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP) is a well-established mathematics examination that is prepared to assess candidates on questions that are similar to undergraduate mathematics questions.

STEP exam is used by:

  • Imperial College London.

You must check the requirements of your course(s) to confirm if you need to take STEP.

What are A Level Exams?

The Advanced Level (A Level) exam is a subject-based exam and its qualification is granted as a part of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) to students aged 16 and above. Students who complete their secondary or pre-university education are offered a school leaving qualification by the educational bodies in the U.K.

Generally, A Level (or equivalent) qualification is needed during the university entrance process. A university grants offers to a student based on his/her A Level grades. A Level qualification is of two years and a student usually needs a minimum of 3 subjects to get into most higher education universities.

What are AS Levels?

The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is an academic qualification and exam conducted in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. This is conducted in Key Stage 4 for a particular subject. 1) Book ISEB 11+ Exams

Students in the United Kingdom sit the ISEB 11+ exam (a Common Entrance Exam) when they are in Year 6 (aged 11). This exam is generally taken to enter into senior independent schools. Two exam sessions are conducted each and every year i.e., in November & January. Most students sit the examination in January which usually consists of English, Mathematics and Science as subjects.
