WELCOME TO A LEVELS
AT CHERRY HILL

Welcome to A Level Tuition at Cherry Hill Tuition

Welcome

A Levels at Cherry Hill Tuition are excellent and have an incredible track record for delivering amazing results. Nearly all of the students that apply have received recommendations from previous students who have achieved As and A*s. It is widely suggested that A Levels are amongst the hardest exams in a student’s life. Therefore, starting our program early is strongly advised.

Subjects Covered

As one of the oldest tuition providers in Britain, the Cherry Hill A Level programs include intensive teaching in:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
(Other subjects are available upon request.)

Exam Boards Covered

We cater to all major exam boards, including:

  • AQA
  • Pearson Edexcel
  • OCR
  • WJEC
  • Cambridge International
*International / Overseas exam boards also catered for. See our overseas websites.

Teaching Strategy

Our strategy at A Level is to teach subject content thoroughly. This includes expert teaching of topic theory in addition to model answers to a wide range of exam questions. Tutors will teach students to an A/A* standard.

The majority of our A Level students begin with a strong GCSE background and transition straight into A Level tuition after GCSE exams finish. Their aim is to “hit the ground running” and maintain their top grade standard to ensure they can realistically aim for A/A* grades at A Level. Our system is designed for both those attending school or college and those without a school or college.

Applying for tuition to improve weak grades (for example, low mock exam grades) is certainly possible on the proviso that the student is prepared to work very hard. Our tuition is proven to work best in the long term, as opposed to short bursts of attendance.

Schedule & Fees

The AS (Year 12) and A2 (Year 13) content is usually taught over two academic years.

(To study AS and A2 in one academic year, please see ‘A Level Intensive Program’ section below.)

  • There is one lesson per subject every week.

  • Each A Level lesson at Cherry Hill is two hours long

  • Lessons take place on weekdays evenings and/or weekend days

  • Lessons take place in our buildings or in our online centre. (We do not recommend you split between the two).

  • See our websites for costs at www.cherryhilltuition.com

  • Pupils receive approximately one hour of homework per subject, per week.

  • Academic Mentors are an integral part of the learning experience at Cherry Hill.

Our Additional Study Systems

To give our students an elite advantage, there is a second system of home learning required for A Level Biology and Chemistry only.

Our students know this as “The Parallel System”:

  • The Parallel System involves printing exam papers and writing detailed revision notes according to tried-and-tested instructions.

  • The notes are scheduled to be made well in advance of final exams to allow sufficient time for memorisation.

  • Without this note-taking system, it is extremely difficult to achieve an A/A* for Biology and Chemistry.

  • The Parallel System method of creating revision notes is unique to Cherry Hill.

  • Academic Mentors work directly with students on The Parallel System. Hence it is separate from the regular weekly lesson content.

Which Subjects to Choose

Care should be taken when choosing A Level subjects.

The decision should be based on:

  • Academic Strengths (i.e. GCSE grades)

  • University Degree / Career Requirements

Most students will choose 3 A Level subjects. Some schools require students to study 4 subjects at AS, though this is rare. The majority of top universities only require 3 A2 Level subjects.

If you are unsure which career you wish to enter or which degree to study, it is advisable to select A Level subjects that you are most comfortable with.

(Universities publish entry criteria for each undergraduate course they offer. Check university websites and www.ucas.com to determine which A Level subjects/grades are required for specific degrees. For example, a student applying for Medicine normally requires A/A*s, with Chemistry and Biology as mandatory subjects.)

Generally-speaking, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics are thought to form part of the “traditional academic subjects”, highly-favoured by top universities for a range of degrees.

The A Level Intensive Program

For students new to us that apply to retake their A levels, Cherry Hill Tuition offers an A Level Intensive Program. This program allows the study of AS and A2 content in one academic year instead of the usual two, and provides two lessons per subject per week – one for AS (2 hours) and the other for A2 (also 2 hours). Fees are double the normal fees to reflect double lessons/hours.

When To Apply For A Level Tuition

Applications can take place at any time during Year 12 and 13. However, most students enter our A Level waiting list in Year 11 from the 4 January each year. There is a surge in applications during August and September when GCSE results are released. Places are limited and we cannot accommodate everyone that applies so early application is always advised.

AS Level tuition, due to the volume of content, courses start around 25 June each year, at a time when pupils are at their peak after the GCSE exams. There are five AS Level lessons per subject before the summer holidays in August.

For students aiming for an A/A*, it is critical that the tuition is started early to avoid knowledge gaps.

Entry Requirements

Though most of our Year 11s are expected to achieve Level 9s, final GCSE grades are required to be at least a Level 7 to continue the subject to A Level, unless extenuating circumstances apply.

We are normally easily able to anticipate our own students’ results if they have been with us for over a year. For those later starters, or new applicants unknown to us, we will normally need final August GCSE results before confirming a place.

For your support: Achieving lower than GCSE Level 7 can result in core knowledge gaps if the subject is taken to A Level. There is a recognised “jump” between GCSE and A Level. At A Level, there is more to learn and the content is more intellectually-challenging.

A Message From Our Head of A Levels

Dear Valued Applicant

Our results prove that our A Level programs are highly successful. We have been industry leaders for decades. Our methods constantly develop and improve. I am supported by a huge team of experts who share the Cherry Hill culture to take each student’s learning personally.

We are proud of past students who have been accepted to the likes of Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group universities to study courses such as Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering and PPE.

The key determiner for A/A* success is a student’s willingness to meet weekly study targets, strong attendance to all lessons and starting tuition early. Admittedly, it is not easy achieving the results we get. Together with the student, we work extremely hard to get As and A*s. Despite most of our pupils achieving these grades, there is never a guarantee that every child can score such achievement. Regardless, the belief by all must be absolute.

I look forward to possibly welcoming you personally should your application to A Levels at Cherry Hill prove successful. ”
