Learning difficulty awareness is becoming more and more prevalent than before.

Children with learning difficulties or disorders are just as important and should receive the highest care and recognition that will help them reach their full potential. Having a learning difficulty or disorder does not mean having a problem with intelligence, but rather having a special way to see, hear and understand things differently.

That is why at Cherry Hill we aim at 100% support for children with such conditions and aim to seek the best ways possible to fully accommodate them.

How can you recognize which difficulty or disorder your child may have? Here is how you can recognize and determine which condition your child may have trouble within the table below:

Learning Difficulties Name, Symptoms & Possible Solutions

1. Dyslexia

Difficulties in:

  • Learning how to read and spell
  • Mispronounces words and can’t explain fully
  • Misunderstands some words when used together
  • Takes longer to think

How can you help?

  1. Read fewer material at a time
  2. Explain each sentence
  3. Make use of smart devices (smartphone/tablet/iPad/kindle) to substitute writing for typing
  4. Always work in quiet areas
  5. Be patient

2. Dyscalculia

Difficulties in:

  • Counting numbers forward and backwards
  • Algorithms and problem solving
  • Number patterns and sequences
  • Can forget dates and basic calculations

How can you help?

  1. Say, write and repeat every math problem
  2. Practice sequencing repetitively
  3. For long task, break them down into smaller tasks
  4. Apply basic calculations to real-life situations

3. Dysgraphia

Difficulties in:

  • No coordination
  • A firm grip on pen, crayon or other writing tools (often painful)
  • Discomfort while writing

How can you help?

  1. Use large and bold letters when writing/reading
  2. Implement regular handgrip exercises
  3. Make it a habit to ask the child to dictate a short story and write it down

4. Dyspraxia

Difficulties in:

  • Can be clumsy
  • Difficulty playing with peers
  • May take longer to complete tasks
  • Can get easily distracted

How can you help?

  1. Visually and physically encourage tasks to be done
  2. Repeat basic skills until they become more confident
  3. Help is a physical communication

5. Dysphasia

Difficulties in:

  • Slow to understand spoken language
  • Reading and understanding written material

How can you help?

  1. Use pictures repeatedly and ask them to answer in short sentences verbally
  2. Use smart devices such as tablet/iPad/kindle etc. to encourage text-to-speech and speech-to-text

6. ADHD

Difficulties in:

  • Being easily distracted and can’t stay focused.
  • Restlessness and not being emotionally involved
  • Hyperactive and highly impulsive

How can you help?

  1. Encourage the child to describe basic day-to-day activities
  2. Encourage working out to encourage regulated rest
  3. Keep tasks and learning shorter
  4. Encourage completing tasks in small quantities
  5. Have them work in a quiet area

7. Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)

Difficulties in:

  • Reading and understanding what was read
  • Understanding and following directions
  • Easily distracted and loses focus

How can you help?

  1. Use bright, bold and clear visuals
  2. Repeat on keywords for emphasis
  3. Work together in order to improve patterns and sequences
  4. Avoid tasks that take longer to complete

8. Visual Processing Disorder (VPD)

Difficulties in:

  • Differentiating between objects such as shapes, symbols and numbers
  • Interpreting anything seen with eyes
  • Reading due to failure in visual interpretation
  • Visual memory (can’t easily remember what they saw)

How can you help?

  1. repetition of objects, shapes and symbols
  2. Read short paragraphs and do a memory test
  3. Encourage to see, identify and explain
  4. Place visual stickers of objects/shapes/symbols hard to remember

9. Executive Dysfunction

Difficulties in:

  • organizing and planning out tasks
  • forgetting tasks such as homework or other assignment
  • personal is disorganized and sometimes mess
  • completing and moving from one task to another
  • following step-by-step directions

How can you help?

  1. Time your child’s daily activities such as getting ready, basic house chores and school tasks
  2. Make use of a bulletin/planner board with each task clearly marked
  3. Establish different methods of learning
  4. Implement satisfactory points or other rewards methods for every task completed in time

Learning difficulties and disorders are not the ends of the road for a child nor should they be a difficult challenge for the parent to bear.
